Father of Jina Mahsa Amini: We will organise a memorial service on Sunday

The father of Jina Mahsa Amini, who was murdered by the Iranian police in custody two years ago, announced that they will organise a commemoration ceremony on Sunday.

Jina Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman, was detained and tortured to death by the ‘morality’ police in Tehran in September 2022. Jina Amini’s death sparked an unprecedented rebellion in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan. This rebellion was called ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom). Iranian forces killed hundreds of people and arrested thousands during the uprising. Many were executed. Human rights groups say the Iranian government uses the death penalty to suppress public outcry.

Speaking to Radio Farda, Jina Amini’s father, Amjad Amini, stated that they will organise a commemoration ceremony on the second anniversary of the murder of his daughter.

Amjad Amini said that if the Iranian state does not engage in repression and obstacles like last year, they will organise the commemoration ceremony this Sunday (15 September) in line with the suggestions of the people.

Amjad Amini added, “As Jina’s family, like every Iranian family, we want to commemorate our loved ones and organise a ceremony in accordance with religious and traditional values. This is our right.”
