Eight politicians jailed in Van

Eight politicians including DBP provincial co-chair have been jailed in Van province.

Court procedures have been completed for 12 people who were detained during raids by special operations police on Democratic Regions' Party (DBP) office and several houses in Van province on May 11.

After giving their testimonies at the prosecutor's office, one of the detainees was released while the other 11 were referred to court.

Journalist Serhat Yaruk, DBP Women's Assembly member Dersim Ak and Rojava Association co-chair and DTK (Democratic Society Congress) Van co-spokesperson Şengül Bozdemir were then released on condition of judicial control.

The other eight politicians were remanded in custody on alleged charges of “membership to a terrorist organization”.

The politicians who were jailed on basis of testimonies by anonymous witnesses are: DBP provincial co-chair Ahmet Aygün, DBP provincial administrator Necmi Varhan, DTK Van spokesperson Ramazan Duman, DBP Women's Assembly member Miyaser Çelik, Van TUYAD-DER former co-chair Aynur Bağış, DBP Party Assembly member Barış Koyun, İpekyolu former DBP co-chair Alaattin Dağhan and DBP provincial administrator İlyas Başak.

The jailed politicians will reportedly be placed in Van Type T Prison.
