Six days have passed since a ceasefire ended the 12-day war between Iran and Israel. In a statement, Iran’s Judiciary announced that 71 people lost their lives during the attack on Evin Prison.
During the attack, dissidents and prisoners with dual citizenship were also inside the prison. Among them were Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi and Kurdish women prisoners Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha Moradi.
Judiciary spokesperson Ashgar Jahangir stated that those killed included prison staff, soldiers, inmates, visitors, and civilians living in the vicinity of the prison. Israel confirmed that the direct target of the attack was Evin Prison.
Footage released by the Iranian judiciary showed prison walls collapsed, ceilings caved in, and debris being cleared by heavy machinery. According to Iranian officials, the health facility and visitation areas were specifically targeted.
Officials announced that some detainees were transferred to other facilities but did not specify how many people were relocated to other prisons after the attack.
