DEM Party visits Kurdish parties in Amed to discuss Öcalan's call

DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan is visiting Kurdish political parties in Amed to exchange views based on Abdullah Öcalan’s “Call for Peace and a Democratic Society.”

The People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan is visiting Kurdish political parties in Amed (tr: Diyarbakır). Bakırhan first visited the Human and Freedom Party (PİA). He was accompanied by the Democratic Unity Initiative Co-Spokespersons Mehmet Kamaç and Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit, along with Özlem Gündüz, DEM Party Deputy Co-Chair responsible for relations with political parties.

PİA Co-Chair Ahmet Kaya, PİA Amed Provincial Co-Chair Banu Ay, and party officials welcomed Bakırhan and his delegation. Democratic Unity Initiative Co-Spokesperson Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit emphasized the importance of these meetings for ensuring Kurdish unity.

Tuncer Bakırhan said that they had held talks with political parties as part of the process: "We made this visit to hear the criticism, suggestions, and ideas of our parties. Mr. Öcalan himself said that he attaches great importance to the views of Kurdish parties in particular, and asked us to listen carefully to their criticism and suggestions regarding this process and to take notes. He also requested that we inform him of the outcomes of these discussions during our next visit. We have begun these visits. Our parties have their own thoughts and ideas. This process is not just between the DEM Party and the AKP. It is an issue that concerns all of us because it points to an understanding that, if realized, would allow 86 million people to breathe as equal citizens on a democratic foundation, encompassing and addressing all 86 million people in a democratic society.”

Stating that PİA is also a party to the new process, Bakırhan said, “With such an important process underway, PİA's thoughts are important to us. That is why we came here, and I hope we will have a good meeting.”

In response, Ahmet Kaya said that they would contribute to the process.

Bakırhan responded to a question about Öcalan’s desire to meet with Kurdish leaders such as Massoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani as follows:

"We are talking about a political leader who has repeatedly called for democratic national unity since the 1990s and has called for a national congress. Given that this process could also affect Iraq, Syria, Iran, and the region, it is quite normal for Mr. Massoud Barzani, Bafel Talabani, and other political party leaders and opinion leaders there to meet with him. We will engage in various contacts on this matter. We hope that Mr. Öcalan will also exchange views with Kurdish leaders regarding the ongoing process and consider their suggestions. This is very valuable and important. As the DEM Party, we believe that this meeting will make a significant contribution and is necessary."

The meeting then continued closed to the press.

Bakırhan and his delegation later visited the Revolutionary Democratic Culture Association (DDKD). Speaking there, Mehmet Kamaç drew attention to the importance of Kurdish unity. He said that they would hold conferences in Doğubayazıt, Ağrı on July 26 and in Mardin at the beginning of October.
