The Democratic Regions Party (DBP) and Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) organized a “Freedom for Peace” rally in Amed (Diyarbakır) on Saturday, calling for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan to achieve peace in Turkey, Kurdistan and the Middle East.
A young man walking after the rally was dragged on the ground and detained on the grounds of “resisting the police”.
Siirt DEM Party MP Sabahat Erdoğan Sarıtaş and a group of young people who tried to prevent the mistreatment were attacked by the police with pepper gas and 5 people were injured.
After the rally, the police intercepted the young people heading towards Çand Amed Congress Center and detained 4 people, including a 15-year-old minor.
Gülistan Daştan, the sister of journalist Nazım Daştan who was killed by a Turkish drone attack in Rojava in mid-December, was also taken into custody on the grounds that she was carrying her slain brother’s photograph.

DEM Party Youth Assembly member Vedat Özer, who was injured in the police attack after the rally, was taken to Dicle University Faculty Hospital for treatment. Özer suffered a cerebral hemorrhage due to blows and kicks to the head. He is being treated in the intensive care unit of the Neurology Department at the Dicle University Faculty of Medicine and reported to be in critical condition.
Vedat Özer's family members and friends continue to wait in front of the hospital as his treatment continues.
