Cemetery in Lice devastated for the third time

The cemetery of PKK guerrillas in Lice has been devastated again. It is the second year in a row that relatives find destroyed graves during the traditional visit to the cemetery on the day before Eid al-Fitr.

The cemetery with graves of PKK guerrillas in Lice district of Amed (Diyarbakır) has been devastated again. Relatives of the guerrilla fighters buried there found the desecrated graves and smashed gravestones during the traditional visit to the cemetery on the day before the Ramadan Feast (Eid al-Fitr).

Last year, several families had been confronted with an identical outrage when they entered the completely destroyed cemetery in the Sisê (Yolçatı) district one day before the Islamic festival. In 2015 the Turkish army had even bombed the cemetery - both from the ground and from the air. The families laboriously rebuilt the cemetery. Now it has been devastated once again.

In the immediate vicinity of Sîsê, military operations against the Kurdish guerrillas have been taking place for weeks. It is suspected that the cemetery was desecrated in the course of Turkish military activities.
