Prisoners say wards are not disinfected and masks are not given

Prisoners in various jails talked to their families about the rights violations they are subjected to.

During the weekly phone call with their families, prisoners in Adana Kürkçüler F Type Closed Prison, Tarsus Number 3 T Type Closed Prison, Alanya L Type Closed Prison, Karaman M Type Closed and Antalya L Type Closed Prison talked about the rights violations they are subjected to.

The prisoners pointed out that adequate precautions were not taken against the coronavirus epidemic.

Ebedin Aktaş, who is held in Tarsus 3 Type T Closed Prison, said that the prison administration has not taken the necessary measures to counter the coronavirus emergency. Aktaş said that the guards came to wards for the count, but wards and cells were not disinfected and prisoners were not given masks.

Aktaş added that prisoners are not allowed to go the infirmary. "Mehmet Aktaş suffers from epileptic. His immune system is very badly shaken, he experiences severe crisis."

Şahin Yıldırım and Seyit Aşkan, who stayed in Alanya L Type Closed Prison, told their families: "We have problems obatining cleaning and disinfection products. We cannot get them from the canteen."

Çetin Sağır, who is in Antalya L Type Closed Prison, said that their wards are overcrowded and there is no disinfection products. Sağır added: "We are not given masks nor gloves, not even when we go to the infirmary. Doctors and guards are taking their own precautions. We are concerned about our health."

Mehmet Zair Şahin, who is in Adana Kürkçüler F-Type Closed Prison, said that they could not use the common areas and their relations with other prisoners have been completely interrupted.

"Our ward has not been disinfected. Masks were given to us once. The canteen lack basic needs."

Ali Aydın, who is in Karaman M Type Closed Prison, said that their 6-people wards were disinfected once and that no serious measures were taken.
