Prisoners in Beşikdüzü T Type Prison in Trabzon went on a 5-day alternating hunger strike against the torture practices.

Prisoners in Trabzon Beşikdüzü T Type Prison went on a 5-day alternating hunger strike after the increase in torture in the prison. The 14 prisoners who went on hunger strike on Wednesday demanded the end of torture.

One of the prisoners, Resul Çeker (52) told his wife, Halime Çeker, about the developments in the prison in their weekly phone call.

Halime Çeker said that as of 14 July, the prisoners went on a 5-day alternating hunger strike against the increasing torture in jail. Çeker said that the prisoners will continue their protests until their demands are accepted.

Strip searches

Halime Çeker said that her husband Resul told her that 14 people were staying in the same ward, that they were not given books, radio and newspapers, and that strip searches are carried out at the entrance of the prison and that detainees who did not accept this were tortured.

Çeker said: “The prisoners are constantly punished with solitary confinement. New arrivals are taken to a single cell and the use of common areas is prohibited.

Call on public opinion

Çeker added that her husband told her that the food is of a very poor quality. She called on the public opinion to stand up against torture.

"Let this persecution end as soon as possible," said Çeker.
