Human Rights Association: 255 prisoners have died in 5 years

The IHD drew attention to the death of Mehmet Sevinç, who lost his life in Manisa Akhisar Prison in this week's action, and reminded that 255 detainees have died in 5 years.

The Human Rights Association (IHD) Izmir branch made a press statement in front of Konak to draw attention to the situation of ill prisoners. A banner "Do not be silent, do not be a partner in crime, they are dying" was opened by activists. IHD Izmir branch secretary Ali Aydın drew attention to the death of Mehmet Sevinç, who died as a result of a cerebral haemorrhage in Manisa Akhisar Prison, and the condition of seriously ill prisoner Nurettin Başaran. Aydın expressed his condolences to Sevinç's family, emphasizing that the right to life should be recognized for everyone without any discrimination.

Pointing to the situation of another ill prisoner, Nurettin Başaran, whose right to access to health has been violated, Aydın said: "Nurettin Başaran, born in 1981, was imprisoned in 2016 and sentenced to 25 years. Before being detained, he suffered a traffic accident in 2011. After the accident, he could not use his legs."

Stating that the reports given by hospitals should be considered sufficient for the postponement of the sentences of ill detainees, Aydın said: "Nurettin Başaran cannot walk and is in a wheelchair. He should be release and all ill prisoners with him.”

Aydın noted that it is responsibility of the state to guarantee the right to life of the prisoners and added that since 2017, 255 detainees have died in prison.
