General strike in Eastern Kurdistan on the anniversary of the uprising

In Eastern Kurdistan, a general strike started on the second anniversary of the ‘Jin Jiyan Azadî’ uprising upon the call of many parties and civil society organisations, including PJAK and KJAR,

PJAK (Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan), KJAR (Community of Free Women of Eastern Kurdistan) and many other institutions and organisations in Eastern Kurdistan called for a general strike to mark the second anniversary of the Jin Jiyan Azadî uprising, which started after the murder of Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody Tehran on 16 September 2022.

It is reported that the general strike started with the closure of shops and workplaces across Eastern Kurdistan today.

Background

Jina Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman, was detained and tortured to death by the ‘morality’ police in Tehran in September 2022. Jina Amini’s death sparked an unprecedented rebellion in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan. This rebellion was called ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom). Iranian forces killed hundreds of people and arrested thousands during the uprising. Many were executed. Human rights groups say the Iranian government uses the death penalty to suppress public outcry.
