French Foreign Minister to visit Iraq and Kurdistan Region

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot visits Iraq for the first time as he embarked on a tour of the region, especially to initiate a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Barrot will also visit Hewlêr (Erbil).

On Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot embarked on a regional tour of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in an attempt to restart the process of finding a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The tour comes at a time when Paris will co-host with Riyadh “an international conference on the implementation of a two-state solution” in June.

In the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, the French minister will meet his counterpart Fuad Hussein and then Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

He will then travel to the Federal Kurdistan Region, where he will be received by the leaders of the autonomous region.

According to the ministry, the visit reaffirms “France's commitment to Iraq's stability and its role as a regional center of stability”.

According to the statement, the visit will also be an opportunity to “reaffirm France's determination to continue the fight against ISIS in the context of the transition in neighboring Syria and the repositioning of US forces.”

“This tour will provide an opportunity to prepare for the international conference on the implementation of the two-state solution that France will co-host with Saudi Arabia in June and the Baghdad III Conference on regional stability,” the ministry said on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
