It was revealed that M. Ş. systematically raped many children in Istanbul's Bağcılar district, while in Malatya A.C. was arrested for sexually abusing a 7-year-old child. After the crimes were made public, the bar associations of 81 cities issued a joint statement.

According to the data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute, wrote the bar associations in their statement, “incidents of child sexual abuse have tripled in the last nine years.”

The statement underlined that M.Ş. was tried for the same crime in 2009 and was acquitted due to "lack of evidence".

The statement added that preventive policies should be created and attention was drawn to international agreements. "The need to implement the child protection convention, to which we have the status of a party state, with all its elements, increases in importance day by day."

The statement also asked to expand the scope of the 'Commission for the Investigation of Child Abuse' established within the Parliament and to create a permanent 'Child Rights Commission'. The bar associations said: "It is essential to rearrange Child Protection Law No. 5395 on the basis of the basic principles of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse."

The bar associations also drew attention to the importance of social solidarity.
