Azhdar Piri, editor-in-chief of the international monthly Pazhouhesh-e Melal (Nations Research), was sent to Karaj Central Prison on 4 May after being summoned by the enforcement unit of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Karaj, Alborz Province, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.
In late December 2024, Branch Three of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Karaj sentenced Piri to one year in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state”, with the additional penalty of a two-year ban on online activity.
Piri, originally from Chaldoran, West Azerbaijan Province, and currently based in Karaj, was arrested at his home on 21 October 2024 by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and detained for 21 days at the Ministry’s detention facility in Karaj, where he was interrogated before being transferred to the city’s central prison.
He was provisionally released on bail on 15 November 2024.
