Journalists united against arrests

Kurdish and opposition journalists and authors condemned the ruling AK party terror policy against the Kurdish and left opposition media and demanded the immediate release of all detained journalists.

In a joint text, a number of journalists and authors made the following statement; “The Turkish state has launched a new wave of attack against the free press created by Kurdish people at a huge cost. Dozens of journalists working for Kurdish media organizations, Özgür Gündem and DÝHA in particular, were taken into custody on Tuesday.

This attack within the scope of the so-called “KCK operations” is a part of the systematical suppression plan targeting Kurds.

Not troubled with any moral and legal aspects, Erdoðan’s government wants to silence the Kurdish media both inside and outside. Turkey’s prisons are full of journalists.

Erdoðan, just like in the period of Çiller-Aðar-Güreþ, cannot tolerate the truth.

This operation is at the same time an obvious expression of the insolvency and deadlock that the AKP government faces in the face of right struggle of the Kurdish people.

The Kurdish people’s strong protection of their will, the resistance of the Kurdish politics against the AKP’s impositions and non-compromise of Kurdistan media to facts is the root cause of these operations.

It is therefore obvious yet from the beginning that this operation will remain inconclusive. Neither the Kurdish people’s freedom struggle can be prevented, nor can its free press be silenced.

As journalists, authors and intellectuals in exile, we would like to remind once again that the Turkish state cannot silence Kurdistan media, no matter what it tries!

The life of Turkey’s racist and anti-democratic government system cannot be prolonged through these operations. Neither the democratic richness of the world humanity nor the current phase of Kurdish people’s freedom struggle will allow that.

Before it is too late and before we face more tension in Turkish-Kurdish relationships, we call on the AKP government to give an end to the state terror and to release all political prisoners, Kurdish press workers in particular.

We also call on sensitive public opinion to condemn the Turkish state’s terror against the Kurdish media, to object to operations and to act in solidarity with Kurdish press workers.”
