Forest fires in Mardin and Şırnak

A forest fire has been brought under control in Mazıdağı, Mardin. Shortly afterwards, another fire broke out near the historic fortress. Emergency services are continuing to battle the flames, including with firefighting helicopters.

On Friday morning, a forest fire broke out in the Mazıdağı district of Mardin province. The fire started between the rural neighborhoods of Şebê and Melebîke and was brought under control after hours of firefighting. However, a new fire broke out in the immediate vicinity, near the historic fortress of Mazıdağı.

After the fire broke out, residents initially tried to fight the flames with whatever means they had available. Firefighters were later dispatched to the affected area. The co-mayors and council members of the DEM Party-run municipality of Mazıdağı also supported the firefighting efforts on site.

Due to strong winds, the fire spread towards the settlement of Deşan. At the request of the public, additional firefighting helicopters from Amed (Diyarbakır) and Mardin were deployed to fight the fire from the air. After combined operations on the ground and from the air, the fire was brought under control at midday. Cooling and mop-up operations then began.

Shortly after the first fire was contained, a new forest fire was reported in the vicinity of the Mazıdağı fortress. Here, too, residents immediately began initial attempts to extinguish the fire, while some of the firefighters were redirected to the region. Firefighting efforts in the affected area are still ongoing.

No official information was initially available on the cause of the fires. There are also no reports of any injuries at this time. In the summer of 2024, a devastating fire broke out in Mazıdağı as a result of a short circuit in a power pole. Fifteen people were killed by the flames.

On the other hand, a fire broke out in a wooded area in the countryside of the Bahçelievler neighborhood in the center of Şırnak.

The fire spread quickly over a large area due to the wind. Firefighters dispatched to the scene are continuing to fight the flames from the ground.
