The countrywide mass detention operation of Special Authorized Court Office on 20 December Tuesday, which targeted journalists and was grounded on Anti-terror Law, has been reported by TV channels of special authorized media as a KCK operation.
Our colleagues who are yet in the position of “suspected” in accordance with general law principles and present laws were charged on the mentioned TV channels. Furthermore, in a way which is perhaps more detailed than the yet unwritten accusation of the court. They are firstly announced as criminal without any criminal evidences available, this process has once again been actualized as a result of the operation.
The fact that our detained colleagues are the persons who attach priority and importance to the Kurdish problem reveals that this implementation is performed with an aim to silence the opposition in general and the Kurdish opposition in particular.
Journalists are the members of a job which conveys the existing events and facts in the society to the people as news, photographs or comments by means of writing, sounds and images. The arrest of journalists therefore doesn’t help to hide the existing events and facts from view. Despite not being reflected widely and truly on the media, these events and facts continue and they will continue to happen. Besides, it is no more possible today to conceal or distort any information. Separately, when we look at the protests from both inside and outside of Turkey since Tuesday morning, we see signs that this detention campaign created reverse effects for the architects of this operation. It becomes more and more obvious day by day that the Turkish regime which is propagandized as “advanced democracy” or “17th greatest economy” is a governance which puts journalists in prison more than any country in the world.
The media organizations whose members have been taken into custody yesterday are the media organs that refuse the hegemony that the AKP government wants to impose on the media. This situation is an attitude that lies in the basic builder spirit of journalism.
In the world and the history, especially undemocratic governments have always intended to suppress and silence the media. All of these governments were however defeated in the end. And despite all pressures and obstacles faced so far, journalism still continues to fulfill its duty for centuries.
