DFG co-chair Altan: This unlawful period will come to an end after the 14 May elections

DFG co-chair Serdar Altan, who was imprisoned last year, stated that journalists were held in prison arbitrarily and unlawfully, and expressed his hope that this unlawful period will come to an end after the 14 May elections.

Serdar Altan, co-chair of the Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG), one of the 16 journalists arrested following the Amed-based operation on 8 June 2022, sent a message through his lawyer.

Altan said: “We are going through a period in which freedom of the press is arbitrarily limited, laws and rights are openly violated and ignored. We are being held in prison with similar lawlessness and arbitrariness.”

Altan said they looked with hope at Sunday’s elections and added: "With our belief in the democratic and free future that we all deserve, we know that the unlawful period we live in is coming to an end. As free press employees, we know and see that the struggle of our people will create a great democratic change and transformation. As part of this struggle, we will meet you soon.”
