Dozens detained in police attack on demonstration for murdered journalists in Van - UPDATE

Police attacked masses who gathered in Van for journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin killed by Turkey in northern Syria. At least 39 people, including 10 journalists, were detained.

Supported by the Labour and Democracy Platform, the Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) and Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MKG) staged a demonstration in Van province in protest at the deadly Turkish attack which claimed the lives of Kurdish journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin in northern Syria yesterday.

The police blockaded Art Street before the press statement planned to be made there and attacked the group, who included journalists and politicians.

Mezopotamya Agency (MA) reporters Ruken Polat, Özlem Yacan, Mazlum Engindeniz and Sema Yüce Polat, Ajansa Welat reporters Bazid Evran and Fırat Tunç, JINNEWS reporter Memihan Zeydan, Zelal Tunç, Oktay Candemir and Nimet Ölmez were detained during the police attack.

The other detainees include DEM Party provincial co-chair Gülşen Kurt, DBP provincial co-chair Cemal Demir, DEM Parti Edremit district co-chair Rıhan Kaplan, TJA activist Leyla Aşkan, MEBYA-DER co-chair Hanım Kaya, Eğitim Sen Van Branch co-chair Murat Atabay, DİSK Emekli Sen Branch chair Timur Sağyiğit, TUHAY-DER co-chair Çetin Uyar, Aynur Sarıca, Mehmet Demir, Refik Urar, Şevket Aslan, Nergiz Abi, Serdar Çevik, Kenan Genç, Sami Akti, Aziz Güven, Talip Turan, Fırat Kırdağ, Seyit Kılıç, Evin Karahan, Gurbet Gezici, Garip Yazıcı, Ramazan Duman, Yakup Ataş, Delil Aksoy, Metin Duman, Ökkeş Kava and Nurcan Kayar.

Some detainees were subjected to police violence. The detainees were taken to the Provincial Security Directorate.
