Turkey pays for Israeli massacre

Turkey pays for Israeli massacre

Turkish government is taking the leading position to send humanitarian aid to Gaza on one hand but on the other, she pays Israel, with the tax payers money, to support the Israeli defense industry.

BROTHERS IN ARMS

While protests and huge reaction against the brutal killings of civilians by Israeli army continue, the relations between Turkey and Israel are in question again. Prime minister Tayyip Erdogan branded the attack as “state terror”. But the same prime minister has put his signature under many agreements with Israel, mainly for arms deal.

COMPROMISE IN RETURN OF SUPPORT

Turkish government allowed Israeli war planes to fly freely in Turkish air zones and the agreement for Heron and Dominator which will cost millions of dollars to Turkey, with the Israeli arms manufacturers, is still valid. The reason behind Turkey’s dependence on Israel and agreements between them is the fact that Turkey wants to eliminate PKK to end the Kurdish conflict. Israel supports Turkey in that matter and gets concessions in return.

Since it was founded, Israel has established relations and partnership with Turkey which helps them to become regional power and they have agreements to trade mainly arms and other materials. Turkish government keeps criticizing Israel strongly and at the same time keeps its relations and agreements with Israel which encourage and help to strengthen them economically.

Harsh criticism towards Israel by Prime minister Tayyip Erdogan does not look convincing because of ongoing trade agreements and relations between two countries. There are similarities between Turkey’s approach to Kurdish problem and Israel’s attitude towards Palestinian people. And this is the framework in which two countries agree. So it will be helpful to take a close look at the relations between Turkey and Israel.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Relations with Israel became more intense in 1990s. Turkey’s requirements for new, hi-tech weapons because of its war against PKK and the two armies’ joint military mock operations brought two countries closer. But the main reason for two countries’ intense relations is Turkey’s problems with Kurds. Turkey has long been fighting to eliminate PKK. Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan was caught and brought to Ankara as a result of some international agreements. Israel offers support to Turkey in its fight against PKK and asks and gets some concessions in return. Especially in defense and arms industry, Turkey becomes more and more dependent on Israel. Insoluble Kurdish problem suits Israel.

After Ocalan had been handed out to Turkey, in 2002, a contract which was amounted to 1.3 billion dollars for modernizing of four Turkish F-4 war planes, M-60 helicopter, A-1 tanks and some other equipments, was granted to IMI, an Israeli firm. In 2010, Turkey bought 170 tanks from Israel and paid 687.5 million dollars (4 million dollars per tank).

In 2004 another agreement was signed by two countries on building an emergency ammunition storage, defense systems and some other equipments.

The co-operation takes place between the Turkish governmental organization for economic improvement and the Israeli government’s company Mashav which runs agricultural research projects to implement new technology in wider areas. Some Turkish and Israeli firms went in joint ventures in GAP (Project for south east Anatolia) region and formidable parts of the agricultural fields are said to have been sold to Israeli companies. Selling the water of Manavgat river to an Israeli firm has been permitted by parliament vote.

SIX HERONS ARE READY

The most important business transaction between Turkey and Israel was about buying Heron airplanes which flies without human pilots, to be used against Kurdish guerrillas. Turkish defense minister, Vecdi Gonul, went to Israel towards the end of 2008 and signed an agreement to buy 2 more Heron airplanes for 183 million dollars. Another contract for 141 million dollars was assigned to an Israeli company to implement aviation and space communication systems with cameras for TSK (Turkish armed forces). In the beginning of 2009, just before Israel attacked Gaza, Turkey had signed an agreement to buy some weapons from Israel, worth 167 million dollars. The cost in that period is said to be around 1.8 billion dollars.

FOUR HERONS ARE ON THE WAY

The most expensive business agreement between Turkey and Israel is almost completed. In February 2010, six Herons, which cost billions of dollars, are delivered to Turkey. Another four Herons will arrive in June or July this year. Before attending to group meeting of AKP, defense minister, Vecdi Gonul, told the newspaper reporters that the crisis between Israel and Turkey would not cause any problems for receiving the rest of the Herons. “We expect them in here soon” he said.

In the next few days, Turkey will buy Dominator defense system from Israel. This system is achieved by turning the Austrian made airplane, “Diamond Aircraft A42, with 2 engines, into an aircraft without human pilot. The airplane could be hired for six months for about six million dollars from the Aeronautics defense systems firm which is a joint venture between American and Israeli companies.

PILOTS WERE IN KONYA

As, it was discussed when Israel attacked Gaza, Israeli pilots are trained in Konya. Before attacking Gaza, Israeli pilots flying exercises in Konya. The agreement which allow Israeli pilots to be trained in Turkey was signed by Necmettin Erbakan in 1996.

On 1 March 1994, security and secrecy treaty between Turkey and Israel was signed. Later on, on 23 February 1966, military training and co-operation treaty was signed by Cevik Bir Who was the vice president of armed forces. With this treaty, sharing the information and communication, organizing the joint military mock operations became possible. And also it allowed Israeli war planes to fly in Turkish air zones. In 16 April 1996, eight Israeli pilots came to Turkey with F-16 war planes for training flights, for the first time. With the agreement, every year, Israeli Pilots were trained in Konya plains.

Most important incident after the agreement was the attempt to assassinate Abdullah Ocalan, which took place in Sam on 6 May 1996. The cost of the attempt was around 50 million dollars and it was understood that Israel was behind it taking active role.

In RP (welfare party) and DYP(Straight Path Party) coalition government era, more agreement was signed by Necmeddin Erbakan. Free trade agreement and co-operation in defense industry agreement were signed. !996 was the year most of the economic and defense agreements were signed.

ISRAEL BOMBED SYRIA FROM TURKEY

In 2007, the airplanes, which bombed Syria, took off from Konya main air base for jets In return for allowing the Israeli airplanes to use the air base, Turkey signed an agreement to buy technical instruments from Israel to be used against PKK. It was claimed that Herons were sold under that agreement.

In March 2010, Israel assassinated a Syrian statesman in Hungary and Israeli airplanes used Turkish air zone for that purpose.

In 28 December 2009, AKP renewed the agreement which allows Israeli airplanes to use Turkish air zones.

ENERGY AGREEMENT

In 2006, another agreement was signed for energy project. The agreement was signed in Israel by Israeli minister of Infrastructure, Ben Elizer and Turkish energy and national resources minister Hilmi Guler. Building the pipeline to bring Hazer petroleum and gas to Ceyhan and Red sea was in the agreement. That agreement was signed after Erdogan was promised continuous co-operation by the vice president of the Jewish organizations confederation, Malcolm Hoenlin.
