Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Istanbul MP Sebahat Tuncel spoke to ANF about the killing of Mensur Güzel executed on the Kartepe ferry he had taken control of. Tuncel underlined that the boy did not represent any real threat for passengers as his declared aim for the action was protesting against the isolation of PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan who hasn’t been allowed to meet his lawyers for 111 days.
Tuncel said the killing at point blank of the boy was a violation of the right to live. She added that the execution was a message from the state: protests by Kurds, no matter which shape they have, are to be met with death.
The BDP MP also drew attention to the role played by the media in Güzel’s killing. The media, she said gave a polluted information and this will be brought to parliament by the BDP.
Tuncel also stated that this “event reveals the current oppressive situation in Turkey. In other words, Mensur Güzel was executed at point blank, no attempt was made to persuade him and capture him alive. Indeed the boy did not intend to hurt passengers in any way. As well as failing to be heard by the public because of the reluctant giving out news by the media, which had at the beginning announced that the action was to protest against the isolation of Öcalan, Güzel was killed instead of being talked out his action, captured and subjected to legal procedure.”
Tuncel underlined that human rights and the right to life were violated in this event and said this execution was unacceptable. Tuncel pointed out that the right to life was sacred for everyone, not for a certain segment alone.
Tuncel also noted that the Interior Minister needed to make a statement to the public for the statements he made telling that Güzel had been carrying explosives during the action, while Kocaeli Governor expressed the contrary.
Tuncel reminded that the Kurdish problem is the most urgent issue in Turkey and ended by saying “What has been lived and seen recently shows that the problem can no more be shelved in the face of the growing pressure. It will not be possible in Turkey to build a real democracy and brotherhood among peoples unless the Kurdish problem is settled up. Despite Turkey’s efforts to ignore and cover up the Kurdish problem with other agendas, the problem is being faced every day as a bleeding wound.”
