Following the recently discovering of yet another mass grave in Mutki, people, particularly Kurds, have taken to the streets to protest against the government’s attitude. Relatives accused the government of inaction, as they see that no attempt to punish the responsible officers of the murders is made. Furthermore excavation on other alleged mass graves keep being delayed if not ignored at all.
Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Kars Branch held a march to draw attention on the mass grave issue in the Region. "Those whose remains were found in mass graves are our children. We are not going to give up on them", said Ýdris Aðbaba, Chair of the branch, addressing the marchers.
Saturday Mothers’ weekly meeting in front of Galatasaray High School in Istanbul was dedicated this week to the victims whose bones were lately found in the newly excavated mass graves. Gülavi Eren and brothers Selahattin and Metin Yýldýz were identified after their bones were recovered from the mass grave in Mutki.
There are still 15 people’s remains waiting to be identified. Their brothers and sisters gave a speech and share their long lasted pain with Saturday Mothers. They condemned the government for its silence on this case.
So far, 88 bodies have been found in the excavated mass graves while
488 mass graves are still waiting to be opened.
Dersim was another city where people demonstrated asking for justice after the discovery of new mass graves. Human Rights (IHD) and BDP Dersim Branches are leading the three-days protest staged about the alleged mass grave found in the town of Çemiþgezek.
According to allegation, the remains of 19 Kurds were buried there in April 1997.
People are asking the authorities to respond and many families want the graves to be excavated.
Mothers were on the streets in Hakkari to demand to open the other mass grave in Demirli (Rezan) Village where allegedly 8 people were buried.
Kurds in Urfa and Antalya called on Prime Minister Erdoðan to order the excavation of the mass graves.
All these demonstrations asked the government to establish a ‘Truth Commission” in order to investigate allegations and search for mass graves.
