The third day of the historic KCK trial in which tens of Kurdish mayors and politicians are tried started today. While the 7,587 page indictment is read as a summary in the hearing the protesters are continuing their ‘vigil for peace’ in front of the court yard.
Under arrest defendants who are kept in Diyarbakir D and E type prisons were brought to the court early this morning while hundreds of protesters were waiting in front of the building in order to express their support. Meanwhile, hundreds of human rights activists both from Turkey and abroad are waiting under a ‘peace tent’ set up next to the court building.
7,587 page indictment is read out
104 under arrest defendants, 48 defendants who are on trial without arrest and 300 defendant lawyers were present at the court room. As the indictment was too long to be read during the hearing the court had decided to be read as a summary. Reading the remained part of the summary also continued today.
Speaking Kurdish in the court
Although the defendants wanted to defend themselves is Kurdish the request was rejected yesterday. However, the defendants insisted on speaking Kurdish and answered the questions from the judges in Kurdish.
After the summary is read out the Kurdish mayors and politicians will be given the opportunity to defend themselves. It is reported that the defendants will insist on speaking Kurdish and the reaction from the judges remains as the burning question.
