Suicide rate increased in Urfa

As in Batman, the increase in the number suicides in Urfa in recent years has reached alarming proportions. According to the survey "Increasing suicide in Urfa" by the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, 149 people killed themselves in the last seven months of this year.

The study made by Federation of Women's Associations of Turkey reports that the ages of suicides in Urfa is between 15-25 in women and 17-29 in men.

According to the report, young women lean to suicide as a result of the conflicts they live due to the disapproval of their demands to spend time alone with friends, make a boy-friend, change their dressing style, receive education and have a working life.

The report explains other reasons as domestic oppressive attitude of family members towards women which doesn't regard women as an individual.

Pointing out that television broadcasts also have affects on suicide events, the report said; "Women also lean to commit a suicide for not having the right to decide on their marriage or selecting their mates. On the other hand, men generally kill themselves as a result of matters such as bride price, unemployment and not being able to marry the women they want."

According to the report, the number of suicides in the city is 11 in 2008, five in 2009 and 124 in 2010, while this number rose to 149 between January 1st and June 8th of 2011.
