University students from different cities of Turkey and Kurdistan met in Dersim and walked out to AKP (Justice and Development Party) building to protest against the dams to be built in Munzur Valley.
The students, members of “Independent Democratic Students’ Association”, came together to protest the dam and chanted slogans “We won’t permit dams.”, “No cultural pogrom.” And “Munzur is free and will flow freely.”
Making a statement to the press in the name of all students, Naci Ataman from Tunceli University spoke as follows; “Munzur is an original geographical environment and important not only for Turkey, but also for all the world. It is a humanitarian duty to conserve this environment.”
Calling attention to the nature kill with the build of a purification plant on 17 August 2009, Ataman stated that hundred years trees are cut down by the Department of Forestry and thousands of trees submerge.
Pointing at the submersion of many important places near Munzur Brook like "Gole Çeto", "Anafatma" and "Havori Gözeleri, Ataman said; “The silence of central government and authorities against this scream is thought-provoking while the people of Dersim are troubled with this case. Ataman stated that the rent search have marked the process instead of humanistic demands and expressed their strong condemnation to authorities.
Ataman also added that they will be shoulder to shoulder against the dam plans and called people for the demonstration against the dam on 5 June. The students left the area after the statement.
