New human bones have been discovered during the excavations in Saraykapý Ýç Kale area in Diyarbakýr which was used as Jitem’s (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Anti-Terror Unit) interrogation and execution headquarter between the years of 1993 and 1999.
Following the Prosecution Office’s second application to the Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board, excavations in the area continued yesterday with three heavy construction equipments. Skulls and bones of three more people were reported discovered in the area in the wake of the discovery of the bones of 23 people so far.
While authorities still haven’t made any statement on the subject in connection with the ‘confidential’ investigation of Special Authorized Public Prosecution Office, excavations are reported to continue.
The Ýçkale neighborhood used to house a prison, courthouse and JÝTEM headquarters until 1999. It was subsequently handed over the Culture and Tourism Ministry in the same year.
The excavation in the Saraykapý district where also the Diyarbakýr Closed Prison and the Courthouse are being located has been going on since 11 January.
Human Rights Association (ÝHD) Diyarbakýr Branch will process the applications from the relatives of the missing persons and file requests with the authorities for more excavations in the region.
JITEM member Abdülkadir Aygan spoke to a newspaper on these bones and said that “The excavation area is the best place to dig if you are looking for remaining.”
He also underlined that military’s Central Squad in Diyarbakýr is also responsible, not only JITEM.
