Reclaim your language !

Defending the language despite the repression. The Kurdish people has been doing this for decades. The last year though this has become an even stronger flag in the fight for their rights above all to decide how their future should be governed. Alongside the proposal of Democratic Autonomy, indeed as part of it the defense of the language has been sending strong messages.

Yesterday for example many actions were organized by the Kurdish people to protest oppression against their historical language.

Diyarbakýr Peace Mothers' Initiative held a protest demonstration against the Chief of Staff's and President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey's (TBMM) statements opposing usage of the language in official areas. The Mothers claimed that the state wants to ignore and decimate 20 million Kurds mother tongue.

Besides the Mothers, the Amed City Assembly of Women in Diyarbakýr took to the streets to hand out white labels and tags to shopkeepers for them to write prices in Kurdish. The Assembly called on the Kurdish people to be conscious of the threat against their language and use it. In addition, Friday Kuthba will be served in Kurdish from now on in Nala Ýshak Village in Cizre. The first Sermon was practiced today and hundreds of people came to the village for the Kurdish Friday Sermon.

The Kurdish Writers' Association honored Diyarbakýr Municipality Workers for their contribution to make the usage of Kurdish widespread and popular in the city of Diyarbakýr.

Yet, official state institutions insist on barring the use of Kurdish. The Tunceli (Dersim) Governorship refused the demand of Tunceli aldermen to reclaim the old Kurdish name of Tunceli which is Dersim. According to the Governorship, the name change can only be made by the TBMM.

Police authorities arrested a bus driver and his assistant in Diyarbakýr for playing Kurdish songs. The driver and assistant stated that they played Kurdish songs because of the passangers' request.

DIHA news agency also reported that the administration of Kürkçüler F Type Closed Prison asked for state funds to translate Kurdish letters, statements and any kind of petitions into Turkish as they prohibit Kurdish within the prisons.

The administration defended their request by referring to the court's prohibition against Kurdish usage at the courts.
