People ask excavation of three more mass graves

The Human Rights Association (IHD) Bitlis Branch applied to the Mutki Prosecution Office to excavate three other mass graves where allegedly 56 people were buried.

According to allegations the mass graves had been dug during the now retired colonel Arif Doðan’s duty as a commander of the concealed Gendarmerie Intelligence Organization (JITEM). Arif Doðan is, now, one of the defendants in the so called ‘Ergenekon’ trial. He is accused of being the perpetrator of most of the extrajudicial killings and unidentified murders which occurred in the 1990s in the Region.

The other alleged perpetrator is retired Brigadier General Korkmaz Taðma who was also on duty at the time these new mass graves are said to have been excavated.

Families of the disappeared stated that 6 people were buried in Arsan Deresi (Newala Warê Hîro) in Bitlis, 33 in Kokarsu (Arpêt) Village Geliyê Karoka in Tatvan in 1999 and 17 in Delikli Taþ zone around Bitlis-Diyarbakýr high-way in 1998.

The families asked the prosecutor to excavate the graves and bring the responsible people on the dock.

A mass grave was recently excavated in Mutki garbage near the Mutki Gendarmerie Commandership building. The remains of 18 people were found in the mass grave.
