One million for peace and wokers rights

A million people attended May Day celebrations asking for peace and freedom in the central Taksim Square, in Ýstanbul. Meanwhile tens of thousands gathered in Van, chosen to stage the main celebration of May Day in the Eastern Turkey.

May Day saw a huge display of security with 38 thousand police, kilometers of iron barriers, many new police cameras and helicopters in Ýstanbul. Workers and citizens began to flood toward the May Day Square from four different streets in the early morning. The celebration began at 11.00 a.m. with a minute stand in silence for people who died during pass May Day celebrations in Turkey, particularly 37 workers who died in 1977 celebration in Taksim Square and around the world as well.

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) took place in the celebrations with more than 50.000 supporters with their traditional costumes.

Turkey Reporters Platform members carried 61 officially arrested reporters’ pictures, including DÝHA and Azadiya Welat daily newspaper’s stuff member Vedat Kurþun, and banners, read; “You cannot silence free and independent press.”

Particularly Che, Marx, Lenin, Engels, Rosa Luxemburg, PKK leaders’, recently killed 17-year-old high school student Mustafa Malkoç and Turkish revolutionaries’ pictures were carried during the marches toward the square and meeting.

Kurdish and Turkish slogans in favor of unity, solidarity, struggle and victory were chanted.

Independent candidates running for parliamentary election took place in the celebration and greeted the crowd.

All leaders of workers’ confederations addressed the crowd and their members except Türk-Kamu-Sen which previously withdrew from May Day Celebration Committee.

Kurds carried on the banners, read four essential demands.

Environmentalists, anarchists, feminists, gay-lesbian, soccer teams’ fans, performers attended the mass May Day with colorful banners and costumes.

Police blocked all enters in Taksim Square and made body search of everyone who wanted to take part in the meeting.
