Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan met his lawyers on Wednesday and said that “We have entered an important process. No one shall deceive himself after 15th June. If the government does not enter this solution process, it would end up in a war in which it would not resist for more than three months. I have been trying to avoid a war between Kurdish guerrillas and Turkish army for the past 18 years,". Ocalan added that he won't intervene after 15 June to stop the war if Turkey won't take any steps to build trust.
Ocalan also predicted that the Turkish government would not resist for more than three months, should a fierce war break out.
During his meeting with lawyers on Imrali Island, Ocalan warned the Turkish government that a large scale war will break out after the elections if they fail to take necessary steps to solve the Kurdish Question.
Talking about the talks going on between him and Tukish official, Ocalan said that he has qualified, reasonable and serious talks with the committee which is becoming more and more aware of how critical the situation is. “Throughout history, they have brought the rebellious princes and leaders to this Imralý Island. They thought they could quash the rebellions by leaving them to death here. Adnan Menderes [The first elected Prime Minister] was also brought to Imrali after the 27 May 1961 military coup.”
Ocalan underlined the importance of drafting a new democratic Constitution and said peace is only possible if the negotiations between him and the state officials end in agreement. Ocalan also called on to the U.S; “The U.S.A should know that Kurds are not the Kurds of the old times and I am not Sheik Said. The freedom struggle of the Kurdish people can no more be prevented by any power.”
Ocalan continued as follows; “The experiences of the past make me consider and evaluate all kinds of possibilities. We were on the point of an agreement with former president Turgut Ozal when he suddenly died in 1993. Once again, we were about to reach an agreement with former prime minister Erbakan when he was quickly overthrown in 1997. The same situation was once more lived in the period of prime minister Ecevit who wanted to reach a solution but was overthrown afterwards. I cannot risk the same thing this time. I will wait till June 15.”
Ocalan called on the Kurdish guerrillas to be careful and protect themselves in this period of self defense, till the general elections.
Ocalan also noted that the fate of the Kurdish political prisoners directly depend on the outcome of the negotiations in Imrali and warned that some of the prisoners may be sentenced to tens of years in prison if negotiations fail.
