Eleven skulls have been found so far in the mass grave discovered in the vicinity of the JÝTEM head office in Diyarbakýr, a few meters away from the Diyarbakýr Prosecution office.
The bones and skulls will be sent to the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) after being examined by a prosecutor. After DNA tests are taken in Istanbul, it will be attempted to establish the identities of the bodies by taking samples from the relatives of missing persons in Turkey's Southeast.
The Diyarbakýr Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday commissioned a specially-authorized public prosecutor to investigate the case and ordered the continuation of excavation work in the area in search of more bones.
The Ýçkale neighborhood used to house a prison, courthouse and JÝTEM headquarters until 1999. It was subsequently handed over the Culture and Tourism Ministry in the same year.
The excavation in the Saraykapý district where also the Diyarbakýr Closed Prison and the Courthouse are being located has been going on since 11 January.
Human Rights Association (ÝHD) Diyarbakýr Branch will process the applications from the relatives of the missing persons and file requests with the authorities for more excavations in the region.
JITEM member Abdülkadir Aygan spoke to a newspaper on these bones and said that “The excavation area is the best place to dig if you are looking for remaining.”
He also underlined that military’s Central Squad in Diyarbakýr is also responsible, not only JITEM.
