Intellectuals and artists to march for peace in Dersim

Intellectuals, artists, human rights campaigners and union representatives will go to Dersim on 4 June in order to call for peace as the attacks by Turkish army is increasing. They will hold a demonstration march demanding that the operations should stop, because thousands died in this region and to reaffirm that the right to live is sacred.

Ferhat Tunç, Suavi, Hasan Saglam, Sami Evren who is the president of KESK, journalist Ertugrul Kurkcu, Ozturk Turkdogan who is the president of Human Rights Organization, are among the intellectuals and artists who gave their support to the initiative. They will be in Dersim on 4 June while the demonstration will be held on 5 June.

A written declaration was issued by intellectuals. In the declaration it is said that “military operations will destroy the hopes for democratic solutions after a short period of expectations for the possible beginning of negotiations in to solve the Kurdish issue which is an issue going back to 90 years, along with Turkish republic history”.

The declaration continued as follows:

“Every day, news of the deaths in the mountains arrive. The news of soldiers and guerrilla funerals make the newspaper headlines more and more. The conflict which caused huge losses in recent decades leaving hundred thousands of deaths and pains for families accelerates again. We hear the news of ambush at military bases, military operations, air bomb attacks and the rhetoric aiming to raise the violence and loss of blood. After all those losses it is obvious that more blood will not help to solve the problem. Without any doubt the mothers cried a lot. Mountains were bombed. Families got their own share of the pains. So many funerals were carried out. Forests were burnt and destroyed. Wildlife population died with the forests. Children, mothers, fathers, loved ones suffered a lot”.

And it ended by stating that: “we have enough of these. We can not tolerate any more bombings, forest fires, contamination of our soil with phosphorescence bombs. There is no excuse to justify any funeral coming to homes from Hakkari to Edirne”.

“Right to live is sacred, it is written in the declaration, we want the shadow of the guns disappear completely from our lives. Violence cause more violence. We do not want to be the victims waiting for our turns in this endless tragedy. With this belief, defending the right to live against the death, We, as human rights activists, artists, intellectuals, will be in Dersim on 4 -5 June. It should be remembered that we died thousands of times in Dersim. We do not want any unnecessary killing anymore” the declaration said.
