President Abdullah Gül visited Diyarbakýr before the new year and talked about the history and touristic importance of the city rather than the solution of Kurdish issue, despite the expectations.
It comes to no surprise then that after Gül's visit, TOKÝ (Housing Development Administration of Turkey) announced that 1596 houses will be demolished in Sur region and the people living in the region will move in the houses built by TOKÝ in Çölgüzeli neighborhood which is nearly 10 km outside the city.
Housing Development Administration of Turkey expressed that people living in Sure region in Diyarbakýr will be moved to TOKÝ houses within the scope of “urban transformation” Project.
The written statement of TOKÝ is as follows; “A comprehensive urban transformation Project has been launched to save Diyarbakir and Sur region from shanty houses and unplanned structures. The historical Sur region, which President Abdullah Gül took under his ‘protection’ during his Diyarbakýr visit, will be developed with the projects carried out with the joint-work of Governor’s Office-TOKÝ-Municipality”.
While the demolition and debris removal works continue in historical Sur region, people living in the region are in the phase of drawing of lots before moving to TOKÝ houses. The area to surface after the demolition of a thousand 596 houses will be put to use as city park, green field and in line with the requirements of the city. Within the scope of the Project, whose costs of expropriation alone reached up to 60 million liras, people living in the demolished houses will be given the TOKÝ houses in Çölgüzeli neighborhood and move to their new houses with the straws to be drawn on 5 January Wednesday. And the families, who didn’t want to move into TOKÝ houses, were paid 10 million liras”.
