Gezmiþ, Aslan, Inan commemorated in Mersin

Revolutionary leaders Deniz Gezmiþ, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin Inan who were executed 40 years ago on May 6 were commemorated in Mersin with a broad participation by all leftist circles.

The commemoration activity traditionally took place at the 68’s Forest of Peace and Brotherhood which bears the name of a generation who gave struggle for freedom and which became a symbol for the revolutionary movement and socialist struggles since 1968. Photographs of all martyrs who lost their life in this struggle are hanged on the trees in the forest each year.

The main commemoration activity on May 6 was made within the scope of six-day activities organized by the Association of 68’s. Among this year’s activities were also the opening of Yýlmaz Güney Monument and Deniz Gezmiþ Academy.

Speaking at the commemoration activity here, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy Ertuðrul Kürkçü said that “May 6 is a march towards future, it is a day when we show our enemies that the lives which are thought to have been taken in Mamak Prison are multiplying more and more every day in all parts of Turkey.”

Remarking that it is time to hit the road for the revolutionary movement which sustained a defeat with the 1980 military coup, Kürkçü continued as follows; “Because all things that we revolted against are still standing in their place. Besides the presence of American imperialism’s domination in Turkey, the domination of bourgeoisie is also expanding more and more. The repression imposed on peoples is higher than ever. However, what differs today from 1970’s is the expanding revolutionary public opposition.”

Referring to Deniz Gezmiþ’s last words [ Long live total independent Turkey! Long live Marxism-Leninizm! Long live the brotherhood of Turkish and Kurdish peoples! Long live workers, peasants! Down with Imperialism!], Kürkçü said the followings; “Deniz Gezmiþ manifested the revolutionist program of the future in his last breath. We are committed to Marxism and Leninizm, we side with the common struggle of Kurdish and Turkish people and we stand against the U.S. sovereignty, imperialism and capitalism. The unchanging program of the Turkish revolution is summarized in his words. We loudly speak these words with the whole fire of May 6 of 1972. We are here not to mourn but to march.”

Kürkçü underlined that militarism cannot be eliminated under current conditions in Turkey which, he said, was trying to make Turkey the military base of U.S. imperialism as well as to wage a war against Syria, to scuffle with Greece, to determine the regime in Iran, to wave its flag in Caucasian countries and to be a party to America’s military plans. “We want neither a military nor police dictatorship, what we want is the leadership of people” , added Kürkçü.
