Basque tour operator offers trips to Iraqi Kurdistan

The Federal Region of Kurdistan has been listed this year as one of the most attractive touristic destination by the National Geographic as well as the New York Times. The transition from war zone to touristic attraction has been quick. Too quick. First came the definition of "secure zone" by, for example, the British government responsible, together with America, of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. A war, is worth repeating it that has produced over 150 thousand deaths among civilians, with thousands of deaths every year. Deaths that occurred in the 'peaceful' Kurdistan area as well. But despite the news coming from Sulaimaniya just last week (35 people reported wounded at a demonstration against corruption) Spanish tour operator seem not worried at all. And indeed they are promoting the trip to the South Kurdistan as "adventurous".

The National Geographic describing the beauty of its landscapes describes the Kurdish Region as "an oasis of safety".

The tour operators use adventure as an ingredient to mix to the ancient history of the area once known as land among two rivers, the Mesopotamia. Speaking to Manuel Martorrell Basque tour operator Karlos Aguirre of travel agencies Itsaslur (in Navarra), said that "these types of trips allow people to get to know not just a fantastic country but also the place where civilization was born". Doubts remain about safety of Iraqi Kurdistan region but yet many think that bringing people into relatively safe areas could indeed contribute to enhance stability and peace.
