A Revolutionary Family in Rojava

A Revolutionary Family in Rojava

We grew up reading from the world classics how to make a revolution, who and how is playing their role in revolutions. Today, a knock spot off revolution is being lived in Rojava.
In Rojava since I came after a few months from the 19 July Revolution I’ve encountered hundreds of, thousands of, tens of thousands of people who refresh  the warmth and excitement of revolution every day.

I witnessed many life experiences which may be subject to novels beginning from the Koçero villages along the Tigris River in the Duhok-Zakho route till the Hamam Village on the other edge in the border of Reyhanli.
What I saw in Rojava is how thousands of families I ate their bread with are connected to the revolution, how they defend this revolution with their goods, lives, their children that are their most valuable assets, I saw what they do for the sake of defending it. One of the families I met and have been affected is the Beko family.

We encounter the father, Hasan Beko in Serhat Martyr Revolutionary Youth Education Camp. He was saying to a girl (who I later learned that she is the smallest daughter of the family): ‘you impose what you’re saying’. When I asked what she will impose, he said: ‘She wants to join YPG (People's Protection Units) but her friends want her to stay in youth activities. If it was up to me she could join the YPG. Because YPG is protecting us in a period of so intense and widespread attacks.’

DILAR, REWŞEN, ŞERWİN VE AXİN

When I kept asking questions, so to get to know Hasan Beko better, I learned that the whole family devotes their life to struggle.
Hasan Beko who is from Afrin, Şêrava, Celemê who is 53 years old and Ayşe Kamber Şêxo have 7 children.
We understand why Beko is saying referring to his first daughter: "We missed her. She went to get married before we met the freedom struggle when the word comes to other children".
The second child Dilar join the Kurdish Freedom movement in 1997, her smaller sister Rewşen also joined after her. Hasan Ali Beko and his wife Ayşe Kamber Şêxo learn that Rewşen passed away for Kurdish liberty movement last year.
When the revolution process has started and YPG was formed, their children Şerwin and Axin also have been participated in YPG.

OUR TASK IS TO DEFEND THE REVOLUTION

Then comes Xunav that I met and Bekir, the youngest one of Beko Family.
When I said: ‘all that you have left is Xunav and Bekir’, he answered: ‘they surrounded us and they are attacking us steadily. In this circumstances, there is only one thing to do when you are a person of  honour, the love of the land and the country, and that is defending your land and country with your goods, life and children. To think anything else in such a period of intense attacks equals betrayal in my opinion. We did a revolution and now there are attacks against our revolution. Our task is to defend it.’

6 OF THE 7 SIBLINGS ARE IN THE RANKS OF STRUGGLE

He continues: ‘If I saw that Bekir also joined then I could believe that i fulfilled the duty and I would not die in disappointment. YPG is a power of defending people. People of all ages participate in it. And it seems to me that Bekir will also join very soon.’
Shortly after this conversation, Xunav did what he say; ‘his imposition’ gave result and he joined in the ranks of  YPG. Before I have written this article, i had learned that Bekir also joined YPG. Hasan Ali Beko and Ayşe Kamber Şêxo are going together to leave Bekir with the guerrillas of YPG.

What I wrote is only one of the fiction stories that is read from books. One of the most scorching piece of the struggle that continues in Rojava with its all warmth. Struggle of a revolutionary family, one of thousands of parents in Rojava as a response to Gorky’s Mother...
