Artist Ferhat Tunç was sentenced to two years in prison by Specially Authorized Malatya 3rd High Criminal Court. Tunç was convicted of “making propaganda for MKP (Maoist Communist Party) organization” in a speech he made in Dersim on 1 May 2011.
The trial in Malatya on Wednesday was attended by Tunç himself as well as his lawyers Ercan Kanar and Barýþ Yýldýrým. People’s Democratic Congress (HDK) Executive Council member Tunç, despite his objection to accusations put forward against him, was sentenced to prison in accordance with Article 7 of the Anti-Terror Law.
Evaluating the court verdict in a statement to ANF, Tunç’s lawyer Ercan Kanar said that; “We consider this verdict as a practice of the disregard of universal law principles by specially authorized courts. This verdict is an example of the threat and danger on rights and freedoms.” Lawyer Kanar added that they will go for an appeal against the court decision.
Ferhat Tunç evaluated the judgment as a practice of “mentality of law of war” and said that he thinks the decision is political. “They are trying to teach a lesson to our stance and situation in the social struggle. However, they are wrong if they think they will be able to intimidate us from the struggle for humanity and freedom by giving two years prison sentence.”
Tunç also called attention to a contradiction put forward as the ground of the court decision; “The accusation claims that I made propaganda for MKP, regardless of the fact that I boycotted against MKP and participated in the former elections as an independent candidate. Even this accusation itself reveals the seriousness of this judgment.”
