A new documentary, entitled "Imralı", has recently been made about Abdullah Öcalan and the 2019 International Peace Delegation to Imralı, the International Initiative site announced.
The film was made by John Hunt, a writer and editor, and Jon Spaull, a filmmaker and photographer.
The film is narrated by British actress Maxine Peake, known for her role in TV series "Black Mirror" and "The Village", who was a member of the 2019 International Peace Delegation to İmralı.
The documentary aims to portray the horrendous state repression faced by the Kurdish population in Turkey, as well as around the world, and the central role played by Abdullah Öcalan in the efforts to realize a stable and peaceful resolution of this situation.
The documentary focuses on the 2019 International Peace Delegation to İmralı, which traveled to Turkey and the Turkish Kurdistan region from 11-16 February and, alongside Ms. Peake, was comprised of trade unionists, academics, and politicians, including the former Minister of Justice of Iceland Ögmundur Jónasson.
During their visit, the delegation spoke with numerous politicians, trade union leaders, members of civil society, and representatives from various human rights organizations.
The delegation also had the opportunity to meet with Leyla Güven, an MP of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) who declared indefinite hunger strike to protest the conditions of isolation in which Öcalan is held, who was then on day 98 of her hunger strike.
Since Ms. Güven, then in prison, declared her hunger strike on 7 November 2018, more than 7,000 people around the world have joined her in declaring indefinite hunger strike calling for an end to the isolation of Öcalan.
The documentary features footage from the visit of the 2019 International Peace Delegation to İmralı, and interviews with a number of the people with whom the delegation spoke, including Reza Sarıca, solicitor at Asrın Law Office and lawyer of Öcalan, and Berdan Özturk, MP of the HDP and co-chair of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK).
"Imralı" represents an importatnt contribution to the discussion around Öcalan and the situation in Turkey, and ultimately succeeds in delivering a two-tone message, expressing both the severity and urgency of the situation, as well as the hope and inspiration that the Kurdish freedom movement offers the world.
