On the occasion of Newroz, the Kurdish cinema days titled "Newroz, glances under fire" will be held in Bogotá for the second consecutive year.
For the second time, the Kurdish cinema days "Newroz, glances under fire" will be held in Bogotá. The event was held for the first time in March 2023, when Bogotá’s Kurdistan Solidarity Committee, together with other communities and organizations, promoted it.
Given the success of the event in 2023, the Committee, together with the Acto Latino theater, Casa B and the Bogotá del Tunal district Cinematheque, decided to repeat the cinema days this year. The films to be screened are as follows:
Kobanê by Özlem Yasar
Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, a female Kurdish fighter guides her fellow fighters in the resistance to defend their city, Kobanê, from the deadly threat of ISIS. A real story of war, sacrifice, love and hope.
Tearing walls down by Hebun Polat and Şerif Çiçek
In Turkey, opposition politicians who oppose violence, agitation and repression are dismissed, persecuted, or imprisoned. Especially since November 4, 2016, the AKP government has imprisoned hundreds of opposition politicians or forced them into exile in an attempt to silence them. This film features four Kurdish women politicians, Figen Yüksekdağ, Gültan Kışanak, Aysel Tuğluk, and Sibel Yiğitalp, whose “crime” was to struggle for a hopeful and pluralistic world against an antidemocratic government.
When the seedlings grow by Rêger Azad
While selling yogurt in Kobanê, Hüseyin and his daughter Zelal are on their way. They meet Hemudê, who is looking for his home. Their one-day journey witnesses many misfortunes and a new society after the Kobanê war.
The aim of the organizers is to bring society closer to the contexts and realities experienced in Kurdistan and thus favor ties and bridges between the struggles, resistances, cultures and knowledge of the people of the Middle East and Latin America.
The screenings will be on March 20, 21 and 22 and admission will be free. After each screening, spaces for dialogue will be opened to address the themes of the films.
