The exhibition "Amara" curated by Sinan Hezer with works by 17 artists opened on Friday evening in the Cologne-Mülheim Kulturbunker.
The work by Sinan Hezer, Aslı Filiz, Sarya Nurcan Kaya, Amele, Hogir Ar, Ribwar Parwizi, Hamit Aydın, Serdar Mutlu, Gulistan Güntekin, Murad İpek, İlos İlyas Elias Kırkan, Besna Acu, Berivan İbin and Ayten Kaplan can be seen until tomorrow, Sunday, from 1 to 6pm.
The Kurdish village of Amara is the birthplace of Abdullah Öcalan. The exhibition is part of the campaign for the release of the Kurdish thinker so that the Kurdistan question can be resolved politically.
"We want to show that Kurdish artists are part of the Kurdish resistance," said Hogir Ar, two of whose works are on display in the Kulturbunker.
Sinan Hezer said: "Our heart beats in Amara. For us, Amara is a symbol of our community, freedom and existence."
Artist Asli Filiz said that she had put women, culture and language at the forefront in her work: "I wanted to portray Amara in this way. Women feed their children with their milk, and in the same way, they receive ideal values through the passing on of language and culture. With my pictures I want to say that if you want to keep language and culture alive, you have to let women live."
