Women's festival in memory of Sakine Cansız in Zurich

The 7th Sakine Cansız Festival took place in Zurich with great participation. The festival in memory of the three revolutionaries Sara, Ronahî and Rojbîn, who were murdered by the Turkish secret service in Paris on 9 January 2013, takes place every year.

Under the motto "From the struggle of women to the century of women" the 7th Sakine Cansız Festival took place in Zurich this weekend. The annual festival in memory of Sakine Cansız, who together with Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez was murdered by the Turkish secret service in Paris on 9 January 2013, had to be moved from June to August due to the pandemic. In addition to Kurdish women, many hundreds of Swiss women and refugee women from other countries participated in the festival with great passion. At the festival there were events on the Kurdish women's freedom struggle and the struggles of women worldwide.

The festival started with a minute of silence for all women killed in the revolutionary struggle. This was followed by a speech of the Kurdish women's movement in Switzerland YJK-S.

Tamil women and Kurdish artists like Xece, Leyla Koçgün, Silbus û Tari and Nuarin took part in the cultural programme. There were painting workshops for children and information stands on the struggle for freedom. On behalf of the Kurdish Women's Movement in Europe (TJK-E), Kurdish politician Besime Konca gave a speech. She commended 15 August, the day on which the PKK started the armed struggle in 1984, and said "The resistance of Kurdish women today is the heritage of women like Sakine Cansız. The people have a tradition of resistance, it is carried on everywhere, in the prisons, in the liberated areas or even far away from the homeland in exile. The Kurdish women today have become an example for the women of the world with their struggle."
