Women in Istanbul: We will never give up freedom!

Women demonstrated in Istanbul to mark March 8 and gave the message: "We will never give up our freedom".

Despite the misogynist repression, events to mark international women's struggle day are taking place everywhere in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. In Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, TJA (Free Women's Movement), HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) and HDK (Peoples’ Democratic Congress) organised a demonstration where girls and women between seven and seventy years of age danced in the streets, shouting out joyful slogans like "Jin Jiyan Azadî" and "We will not be silent, we will not be afraid, we will not obey!

At the demonstration, a letter was read from former MP Sebahat Tuncel, who has been held as a political prisoner in Kandira Prison for years. "We fight for a free, equal and peaceful future. We fight inside, you fight outside. Together we will fight for our future," was the message written in the name of the political prisoners in the women's section of Kandira prison. The women responded: "A thousand greetings to the women fighting in the prisons!"

In a speech, HDP member of parliament Züleyha Gülüm referred to the misogynist policy of the "AKP palace government" and said: "This government wants to take back all the achievements we have fought for and made. However, we insist on our freedom and are determined to smash capitalism and patriarchy".
