ROJIN: We will continue to be the voice of women

The Kurdistan Women Journalists' Union (ROJIN) condemned the closure of Kompanya Gizingî Berbeyan Media Production and said, "We will continue to be the voice of women in South Kurdistan and Iraq."

The Kurdistan Women Journalists Union (ROJIN) made a written statement protesting the closure of the all-female Kompanya Gizingî Berbeyan media production company in Sulaymaniyah city in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq). The company, also produces programs for Jin TV, was closed without any official notification or legal record, in cooperation with the security forces, the Iraqi central government, the Kurdistan Regional Government and regional security institutions.

“We condemn this attack, which is an indication of male collaboration, and we express that the closure of institutions will not achieve a result,” said the ROJIN statement on Wednesday, which included the following:

"It grabs attention that the closure of the company comes at a time when a new concept of attack on women is in effect.

On the eve of the creation of new Afghanistans in the Middle East, we see the closure of Kompanya Gizingî Berbeyan Media Production, which tries to make women's voices and words heard with its programs, as a step towards the construction of a system without women in the Middle East.

While hundreds of women in South Kurdistan continue to be buried in the graveyard of the nameless, while the murderers of women fall victim to domestic violence and are buried at night by gravediggers still carry the potential for new murders, while women are forced to burn themselves because their lives are turned into hell, we stress that the voices of women in South Kurdistan and Iraq will be heard, no matter from where and whom the attack comes from.

It should be known that the attempt by the governments of Iraq and South Kurdistan to prevent the truth from being revealed by closing down a production company is a futile effort. We will continue to be the voice of the women in South Kurdistan and Iraq as the legacy and will of our friends, journalists Gülistan Tara and Hero Bahaddin, who were killed in August by a Turkish combat drone attack.

At a time when women’s silent rebellion against femicide in the Middle East is overflowing onto the streets, it is obvious that no journalist or media organization with a conscience, especially women journalists, will or cannot remain silent about this attack on a company that produces programs for JIN TV, the first women's television in the world.

As ROJIN, we call on the Iraqi central government and the government of South Kurdistan to withdraw the closure decision as soon as possible. We reiterate our demand that the killers of journalists Gülistan Tara and Hero Bahaddin be brought to account."
