Kongra Star: Women in North-East Syria will not back down from their legitimate struggle for freedom

Kongra Star commemorated Zenubiya Women's Community executive Kerem Ehmed El Sheheb El Hemed who was martyred in a Turkish attack, saying: “Women in North-East Syria will not give back down from their legitimate struggle for freedom and dignity."

Thousands of people from Cizre, Tabqa, Raqqa and Euphrates cantons travelled to the Tishrin Dam yesterday to support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against the ever-escalating attacks by the occupying Turkish state and allied mercenaries.

The convoy of civilians was targeted by a Turkish airstrike, which claimed the lives of three people and left 15 others wounded.

Kongra Star, the umbrella organisation of the women’s movement in North-East Syria, released a statement paying tribute to Kerem Ehmed El Şeheb El Hemed, an executive of the Zenubiya Women's Community in Raqqa, who was among the victims.

Defining Kerem Ehmed as a person who strived to build a democratic, just and equal society, Kongra Star stated that Ehmed was one of the key leaders of the Zenubiya Women's Community and became a symbol of women's struggle for freedom and rights.

Kongra Star pointed out that Ehmed's murder was a crime against humanity and the values of freedom and an attempt to silence women fighters.

“The international community's silence in the face of these violations paves the way for Turkey to continue its policies of crime and persecution, which will have dangerous effects on regional security,” the statement continued.

Kongra Star called on the international community, the United Nations and human rights organisations to fulfil their moral and legal responsibilities and immediately stop Turkey's crimes against women and civilians in northern and eastern Syria, to open investigations into these crimes and identify those responsible.

“We reaffirm that women in northern and eastern Syria will not back down from their legitimate struggle for freedom and dignity,” the statement concluded.
