The majority of carpet weavers in Iran are women and have no insurance.
Iranian news agency, ILNA, reported that Abdullah Bahrami, President of the National Union of Handmade Carpets Manufacturers, said, "The majority of carpet producers in Iran are women. We are talking about a percentage reaching 70 percent when it comes to weavers”.
Working without any insurance
Bahrami said: “The number of carpet weavers in the country was 2 million. This number has dropped by half since workers do not receive equal treatment. Of these, there are only 320 workers with insurance”.
Bahrami draws attention to the words given by the insurance companies which said that the remaining workers must be insured by March 2020. “But the reality is we still have 150 thousand workers with no insurance”, he said.
Noting that a significant majority of carpet weaving women are family breadwinner, Bahrami said: “How do we support them and secure their future? This could only happen with work insurance. More than 150 thousand families have lost insurance support and most of them are women. The women have lost their money and have no security”.
