Renewed fighting in Qamishlo as NDF breaks ceasefire

The ceasefire negotiated in Qamishlo under Russian mediation between the pro-regime militia Difa al-Watani and the security forces of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria Syria lasted only a few hours.

Only a few hours after a ceasefire was declared between the Baathist Difa al-Watani (National Defense Forces, NDF) and the Autonomous Administration security forces (Asayish), fighting began anew in the northern Syrian city of Qamishlo. The NDF opened fire on a checkpoint of the security forces in the city center. The security forces defended themselves and returned fire. The ceasefire began at 2:30 a.m. that night and was agreed to last until noon. The time was to be used for negotiations.

The fierce fighting, in which the NDF also used heavy weapons, had erupted on the evening of April 20 when the militia attacked an Asayish checkpoint in the center of Qamishlo. Xalid Milhêm Osman, a member of the security forces, was killed in the attack. At least three other Asayish members were injured.
