The Afrin-Syria Human Rights Organization issued a statement on the seventh anniversary of the Turkish state's occupation of Afrin. The statement presented statistics on the crimes committed by the occupying Turkish state.
Accordingly, since March 18, 2018, more than 300,000 civilians have been forcibly displaced from Afrin. Additionally, 10,208 civilians have been abducted, with about a quarter of them still missing, while thousands have been released in exchange for ransom.
The statement highlighted the plight of women in Afrin, revealing that 105 women had been killed, including 14 cases of reported suicide. Additionally, 74 cases of sexual assault were officially documented.
Over the past seven years, a total of 778 civilians have been killed. Among them, 682 were killed by artillery shelling conducted by the Turkish army and its affiliated militias, while 96 died as a result of torture. Additionally, 762 people were injured in bombings, among them 345 children and 225 women.
Approximately one million olive and other forest trees have been cut down, while more than 30,000 trees have been burned. Furthermore, since the occupation of Afrin, more than one-third of the agricultural lands, totaling over 12,000 hectares, have been set on fire.
The statement highlighted that a large portion of Afrin's archaeological sites, some of which are considered of cultural significance by international organizations, have been destroyed due to the attacks on the region. Additionally, more than 59 archaeological sites, mounds, and storage facilities, as well as over 28 religious temples belonging to different sects and faiths, have been desecrated or demolished.
The occupying Turkish state and its affiliated militias have seized villages and towns across Afrin’s city center. In addition to the confiscations of land, they have taken control of more than 10,000 homes and 7,000 shops in Afrin alone.
The Afrin-Syria Human Rights Organization called on the United Nations and all international human rights organizations to take action. Referring to Article 5 of the agreement signed on March 1 between the Syrian Interim Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the organization urged pressure on the occupying Turkish state to withdraw from all areas it occupied in northern Syria and to allow displaced people to safely return to their lands, villages, and homes.
