MSD Executive: We succeeded in ensuring people govern themselves

People living in Northern and Eastern regions of Syria are now self governing themselves: this is a success, said Syrian Democratic Council executive member Eli.

Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) Presidential Council member, Hesen Mihemed Elî answered ANHA's (Hawar News Agency) questions about the developments in the region.

How do you assess the recent developments in Syria, especially at a time when DAESH (ISIS) mercenaries are nearing the end?

There are many interventions in Syria. DAESH mercenaries were cornered in an area east of Deir ez-Zor, while international states have begun operating. However, it should not be forgotten that there are still radical terrorist groups in Idlib. With the end of DAESH everyone is expecting for a political solution.

There are some forces that want to determine the political future of Syria, especially Russia and the US. At the same time there are forces giving their support to Turkey - which is occupying parts of the territory of Syria - and Iran. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have succeeded in ending the DAESH mercenary groups and in liberating Northern and Eastern Syria.

The situation in Syria is actually clogged between these groups. Since each of these states and forces wants to determine the future of Syria according to their own plans, many alliances, conflicts and clashes are taking place. We want to play an active role in the drawing of a new road map in Northern and Eastern Syria. First of all, the war in Syria must end and then dialogue should begin. We have been successful in prompting natural talks in the areas we are in and in promoting dialogue both inside and outside of Syria.

What will happen after the end of DAESH? Can we say that a dialogue process will begin?

In the last process, many opposition sides came to Northern and Eastern Syria and attempted to establish a dialogue with the councils in the region. This is a positive step. We believe that Northern Syria could actually be the basis of the political solution. Despite all disputes, Syrian national dialogue should begin.

The Turkish state is stalling such a political solution. Because it knows well that the political solution of the crisis will begin in Northern Syria. The model implemented in Northern Syria is now beginning to affect the whole of Syria. Many regions began to consider this model as the only way to secure peace and security. We are actually witnessing that the peoples of Syria can determine their future and manage their own regions.

The model implemented in Northern and Eastern Syria, showed that the people could manage and provide a political solution. However, many local and international forces do not want the Syrian crisis to be solved through the implementation of this model, and we see some interventions. For example, the Syrian regime, Russia and Iran actually aim at restoring the regime. Therefore, they want the regime to maintain the same old mentality, although they accept small-scale and formal changes. Turkey is experiencing a very heavy internal crisis and is trying to shift the attention from it by attempting to become an effective force in the region. These positions are the biggest obstacle to the political solution of the crisis.

What kind of solution can be expected while Turkey is occupying some parts of Syria?

Turkey has no idea for a solution. On the contrary, this idea of a no-fly zone at the Northern Syria border and non-intervention in Idlib extends the life of the crisis. Turkey is pressing for the adoption of guidelines to keep its presence in Syria. Turkey's biggest issue, the Kurdish question, and the idea of resolving both that problem and the Syrian crisis by implementing the model of Northern and Eastern Syria, is not something Turkey is ready to consider.

Turkey is afraid of a model providing for people to govern themselves through the Democratic National perspective implemented in Northern and Eastern Syria. Afraid that this model could actually be extended to its own country, Turkey is trying to put obstacle to it in any possible way.

Turkey's presence in Syria is meant to prevent the solution. This problem should be addressed and approached wisely. Because Turkish presence in Syria means deadlock and the risk of Syria’s fragmentation.

The Syrian regime is sometimes threatening Northern and Eastern Syria. What is the regime expecting to achieve with these threats?

We are working hard to ensure the freedom of our region. The Syrian regime, however, is afraid that the system implemented in Northern and Eastern Syria will also be implemented in areas under its control. There is a difference between the areas under the control of the SDF forces and the areas controlled by the regime forces. Areas controlled by the SDF are now managed by local councils. In addition, there are big differences in the areas of service and security. The Syrian regime is afraid that this project will come to life in Syria as a reference model. We see that there are many international states that fear this model. So they want to destroy the model and all its achievements.

Is there anything you want to add?

The people living in Northern and Eastern regions of Syria are now self governing themselves. We have been successful with our experience in this region. Having reached this level, we believe we can continue to succeed until the end. The Democratic Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria will survive to the end.

The real success is not to finish off DAESH but to prevent DAESH and its acolytes from ever reviving. This is an issue we focus on. The International Coalition forces are to remain in the region for this purpose.

It is unclear how long for the Coalition will remain here, it depends on certain conditions. The current crisis can only be solved by political dialogues. The next process will be much more sensitive and critical.

We must be well prepared for this process. We will be successful if we can provide a good service to the people of Northern and Eastern Syria.

So far we have taken important steps. This is the success of all the peoples of Syria and the Middle East.
