The arrest of Kurdish politician Yüksel Koç was protested in Düsseldorf, in front of the Ministry of the Interior of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) with a mass press statement. The demonstration was organized by FED-MED and YJK-E NRW and was attended by people from Kurdistan and supporters of the Kurdish cause.
During the protest, banners reading “Freedom for Yüksel Koç” were held, and slogans were chanted condemning the German state's repressive and arbitrary stance toward Kurdish politicians.
The statement was delivered in German. After the press statement, FED-MED co-chair Ahmed Kobanê gave a speech. Kobanê criticized the German state for criminalizing Kurdish politics and underlined that the Kurdish community in Germany is one of the most respectful of the law and among the most integrated segments of society.
“Kurdish people want to live in peace in this country, express their thoughts freely, and exercise their political rights,” said Kobanê. He stated that Yüksel Koç’s arrest carries a political message and is part of a systematic policy aimed at obstructing Kurdish political activity.
