Ghanaian organisation ACCP joins Freedom of Abdullah Öcalan campaign

The Ghanaian civil society organization ACCP joined the campaign for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and called on the UN to act to facilitate a just peace in Turkey.

More and more organizations are joining the international campaign demanding freedom for Abdullah Öcalan. The Alliance Creative Community Project (ACCP) in Ghana has called on the UN to act and in a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres pointed out that Öcalan has been in isolation for over twenty years, and reiterated his importance for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish question.

The ACCP is a civil society organization founded in Ghana in 2008 and a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The organization carries out projects in communities in Ghana and Togo in the areas of health, hygiene, fire protection, crime prevention and drug abuse.

In his letter to UN Secretary General Guterres, John Nana Yaw Okyere, President of the ACCP, writes: “For the sake of peace and stability in Turkey and the region, we ask you to activate the OHCHR Committee against Torture to immediately investigate and address the prison conditions of Mr Abdullah Öcalan within the framework of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which was signed and ratified by Turkey in 1998. We also ask you to use all your authority as UN Secretary General to engage for the immediate release of the Kurdish people's leader, Abdullah Öcalan. At this critical stage, we strongly urge the UN General Assembly to launch an initiative to facilitate peace talks and to call on Turkey to respect with its obligations under international law. "

Members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) can lobby and provide advice in the General Assembly, the Security Council and other UN bodies.
