Police insult and threaten Boğaziçi University Students

Boğaziçi University students, who were battered and detained while protesting the trustee rector appointed by President decree, were exposed to insults, violence and threats in the vehicles used for their detention.

Boğaziçi University students reported that they were insulted and exposed to violence and threats in the vehicles used for their detention. They added that they refused to handed over their phones without a judge order.

The police attack on students protesting against Melih Bulu, who was appointed as trustee rector to Boğaziçi University, remains on the agenda. 98 of the 159 students who were taken into custody after the police attacked the protest on Monday, were released, while the other students' proceedings continue.

Levent Pişkin, one of the lawyers of the detained students, shared the information he obtained from the students at the Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate.

One single question asked

Pişkin said he had not been able to meet all students yet and added that they were asked only one question "Why are you participating in the protests?"

Lawyer Pişkin said that students who were exposed to insults and violence in the detention vehicle were harassed and threatened with torture because they did not want to give their phones without a judge order.

Underlining that organizing meetings, demonstrations and marches is a fundamental right, lawyer Pişkin said that the students were attacked and underlined that this is a violation of internal law. “The fact that the District Governor and the Governor prohibited the actions for an indefinite period does not mean that the right to demonstrate cannot be used. Such an intervention is unlawful. The Constitution states very clearly under which circumstances the rights and freedoms can be restricted. Students are exercising their right to freedom of expression against an illegal decision. They were actually detained while attempting to use their right to demonstrate. This is not a crime. There are students who were detained as soon as they got off the bus.”
